Are There Rules for Military Spouses/Dates to Follow When Wearing Formal Dresses?
From time to time, we have a few military events to attend. Some of the events consist of a day out in the sun with the entire family:
- Family Day
- Training Events
- and more…
The military has formal events, which these are some of my favorites. It’s one of the few times during the year, I get to dress up in a fancy dress and get a night out, away from the kids. Yes! I love these wonderful teens of mine, BUT it is nice to feel like a princess for a least a few hours.
Most moms are probably like me… We end up feeling guilty after buying the fancy dress or we end up wearing the same dress a few years in a row. For real, who wants to pay anywhere from $200-$300 for a dress, wear it one time, hang up it in the closet (for at least a year), and maybe wear it again next year?
That is why I am SUPER STOKED to have found Ever-Pretty.com. They have a TON of dresses and NONE are ever over $100. Trust me! When I say these dresses are AMAZING and are of OUTSTANDING quality, I mean it. When Haleigh and I received our dresses, we were blown away.
How Can It Be True?
- They have an in-house designer, so they are their own brand.
- They do not out source, which this is how they are able to keep the prices down.
- They make everything in their own factories; leading to even more savings.
When the company started 12 years ago, Anna Shi, CEO, president and founder of Ever-Pretty, wanted to make sure every woman felt pretty. She named the company after the movie “Pretty Woman.” Anna did a great job. If you go on their site, you will see they have hundreds of dresses to pick from for all shapes, sizes, and ages.
Haleigh found a dress super easily. Let’s face it, a 15-year-old girl finding a dress is easier than a mid 30-year-old woman finding a dress. Especially, one that does not make you look either:
- Like you are trying to look 15
However, to my surprise, I found a dress easily! I even found mine faster than Haleigh did.
Now, How Can You Feel Guilty About These Dress Prices?
There is just something about being elegantly dressed next to my husband in his Mess Dress, the Air Force’s most formal uniform. The Mess Dress is worn at formal events like the Marine Ball, annual dinners, dining out, the Air Force’s Airman Awards, etc.
It is a very impressive sight to see all the Enlisted service members and Officers dressed to the nines with their dates on their arms. What is not impressive are the dates that come inappropriately dressed. True, there is not a manual for us civilians follow. However, if you’re at a military event you are representing your date and the service. It is very unattractive when I attend one of these events and see someone with their bottom showing. They stick out like a sore thumb among all the well-dressed attendees.
In honor of our own service member getting home from a six-month deployment, Raising Up Teens wanted to team up with Ever-Pretty.com to help show what a military appropriate gown looks like. The two dresses, pictured throughout this post, are perfect.
After talking with different spouses, from different branches, I realized, they all had similar things to say. So, I want to give a few suggestions…
Military Gown Etiquette: Watch the Skin
- A little cleavage can be tastefully done if you show less skin elsewhere and your breasts are not popping out. Think lower hemlines and wider shoulders. If your dress does not have shoulders bring a shawl. Accessories can make a dress versatile and can help you in this area, too.
- A low-cut back should be done without much cleavage and your hemlines should come to your knees, at least. I feel a low-cut back looks super elegant when paired with a floor length dress and a neckline to the collarbone.
- Try to stick with hemlines at least to the knee. If your dress comes above the knee you should not have cleavage or a low-cut back. Think classic and elegant.
- When in doubt less skin is always best.
